Does a boiled egg diet work for weight loss?

Excess weight is one of the most common and annoying health problems for many, amid a quest to get rid of it.

In this context, the boiled egg diet is a weight-loss program that involves eating boiled eggs in at least one meal every day, reports The New York Post. But is it actually successful?

Not complicated

Experts have some opinions on the diet, which promises to help people lose up to 25 pounds (about 11 kilograms) in just two weeks.

The diet was first described in a 2018 book called "Boiled Egg Diet: The Easy and Fast Way to Lose Weight!" By Ariel Chandler. While the diet is also widely promoted via the TikTok platform, there are even some celebrities following the diet, and Nicole Kidman is said to have eaten the boiled egg diet before starring in "Cold Mountain."

The diet is neither hard to follow nor complicated. Breakfast consists of one piece of fruit and at least two eggs, with the option to add veggies or low-carb protein. Low-carb vegetables are served with eggs or lean protein for lunch and dinner.

Does not provide balanced nutrition

Otherwise, it welcomes the addition of other foods and drinks such as calorie-free drinks, lean meats, non-starchy vegetables, low-carb fruits, fats, oils, and any spices or herbs you love.

In this regard, the diet resembles dozens of other low-carb diets.

"This is a version of a low-calorie, low-carb diet that would promote weight loss, but it won't be sustainable in the long run and doesn't provide your body with balanced nutrition," said New York City-based dietitian Irene Palinsky-Wade.

 Foods forbidden to eat

She pointed out that there are many foods that are forbidden to follow within the boiled egg diet, including:

Bakes, pasta, quinoa, couscous, and barley.

dairy products, including milk, cheese, and yogurt.

-At least.

-Maize beans.

peas, beans, and other legumes.

fruits such as bananas, pineapple, and mangoes.

sweetened drinks such as soda, juices, sweet tea, and sports drinks.

Water loss

For many people, it might be challenging to stick to the diet over the long run because of these restrictions. "This is a restrictive and unbalanced way of eating and may lead to long-term undernutrition rather than sustainability," Palinsky-Wade said.

However, some who stuck to the diet claimed some degree of short-term success despite these problems. One user reported losing five pounds in a week on TikTok. "The system has definitely worked," said a second.

One person, however, filed a more common complaint, saying that "the egg diet will exhaust you because of the eggs. I did it, and it worked, but I hate whites now, "he said.

Palinsky-Wade agrees that dieters may witness some weight loss since the egg diet is low in both calories and carbohydrates, explaining that "initial weight loss will include water loss, leading to exciting results but not significant actual body fat loss."

Physician or dietitianPalinski-Wade and other professionals, along with many who have tried the diet, believe that the main worry is that while the diet might work for a few weeks, it is not long-term sustainable.

People frequently overeat following a really restrictive diet, so you'll end up gaining back all the weight you lost plus more, according to Palinski-Wade. It would be wiser to examine the system's healthier and longer-term plan with a doctor or dietitian.

Rich in nutrients

It's important to remember that eggs are nutrient-rich and can be a beneficial component of a balanced diet because they include high concentrations of iodine, selenium, riboflavin (vitamin B2), biotin (vitamin B7), vitamin A, vitamin B12, and vitamin D.

It's crucial to see a doctor before beginning an egg-heavy diet because it also contains significant quantities of saturated fat and cholesterol, which may raise concerns for those who are worried about their cholesterol levels.
